Frame:
Standing a fairly medium height for a woman, Maisie is healthily slim which is probably an attribute of being in great physical shape while also being a wizard making field rations delicious. Maisie has long blonde hair that is nearly white-blonde. She always keeps it tied into a thick braid that either hangs heavily down along her spine or it rests gently over one of her shoulders. Maisie has very blue eyes that sometimes are mistaken as coloured contact lenses but they are actually her true eye colour. Her skin is quite pale and very smooth. Maisie spends a lot of time on her appearance in the mornings. And when in civilian clothes she probably looks like the least likely soldier. Her clothing varies from situation to situation. When casual is enough she is usually just seen in a blue-ish tanktop and a pair of black yoga-pants or leggings and a pair of flats. Should the situation demand a more formal look then she’ll either wear the service uniform of wherever she is stationed or wear a white shirt along with a knee-length skirt. Because of her home planet, Maisie is quite adaptable to cold weather and often found to wear short sleeves or capri jeans long after most people start to wear winter clothing.
Personality:
Maisie is not the typical military person. Not that she is a bad soldier, she does what she is told and she has the utmost respect for rank. However the military was never a first choice for her. She is a very pretty girl and Maisie will often wake up early to have to time to get ready for the day and she does have quite a morning ritual that involves braiding her long hair, applying an appropriately subtle but noticeable layer of make-up and of course making sure that her uniform and everything else is in perfect condition. She enjoys reading books and even writing short stories of her own. She never writes about war though.
Maisie is fairly withdrawn though. She usually doesn’t join a table when eating the meals on a base but prefers to find a free table or even better to eat it at her quarters. Maisie also prefers to stay in her bunk and read or write rather than participating in group activities. There are two main reasons for this: One is that she is a bit shy and doesn’t always feel comfortable talking to new people and perhaps more importantly, she knows that there are consequences of being at war and she hopes that if she doesn’t know people all that well, their possible death won’t affect her as much.
When she does open up to people or participate in something she will warm up to people of course and she will gladly joke around or talk. Maisie will usually be in favor of helping out people in need regardless of the situation and she will often think back on situations where someone wasn’t helped for quite a while. While Maisie might be a bit hard to read at times, she does have one dead giveaway. The way that her braid usually end up on her should is because she always fiddle with it when she is nervous. It is a habit and even without he saying it, people can see it like that.
History:
It might be a bit odd to have a human that has never set foot on Earth. But Maisie was born and raised on the icy planet Magnum’s World in the Hector system. Her father was a high ranking officer in the planetary defense army and her mother worked as an administrator in the ore mining sector. Both of Maisie’s siblings are employed in the military and both hold good ranks. Maisie however never wanted to be a soldier. She actually wanted to pursue a civilian career and it is probably what most people at her school had expected as well. She was always a neat girl who did her homework and studied hard to get into the university that she wanted to go to. Of course some of the boys at her school seemed to be convinced that she should much rather seek employment in the modeling industry but Maisie had other plans.
However Maisie wasn’t the only one with plans. Her father was a military man and his father before him and both of his great grandparents had served. In fact, it was hard to find any link in the Forrester family tree that had not worked in the military in some way and according to her father, Maisie should be that link. He practically insisted that she should join the military and as the laws dictated she had to have parental support to apply for anything while she was still a minor. Her father made sure to tell her though that she could still get an education in Communications in the army and that she would be able to use it for so much more later in life than the civilian communications education.
So Maisie was trapped between either waiting to come of age to make her own choice or to start her education immediately and take it through the military. Because of the pressure from her father and the fact that she didn’t want to wait for a year she agreed to join the army on the condition that she would be able to get a spot on the communications course.
She started basic training and it actually went fairly well. Sure many of the classes were not what she had originally wanted but the army certainly proved to have a good sense of discipline and honour and Maisie found it less bad than she might have expected. Once basic training was over she began the drop course and on the planet Arcturus in the Alpha Centuari system. The drop course was actually quite fun but most of the cadets didn’t yet grasp the full gravity of the future jumps they would make. It was still just training and watching someone drop further away from the target location than one self was the source of much laughing and teasing and there was a standing contest about who could land the closest to the target. Maisie was never amongst the closest though. After the drop course, Maisie was admitted to the communication course that she actually wanted and she went through it with the highest grade in her class before she and the other students from her planet returned home to work for the defense of their home planet. Maisie and the other students had to partake in the guard roster for the defense base. Usually nothing happened and the students could sit in the guard tower and talk about classes or the massive amount of homework that they received as most of them began to expand their military education with a civilian one too, while looking out over the snow-covered mountains. Maisie was actually still set on leaving the army after only a year but the army provided a steady income, good colleagues and leaving just never seemed like the right time. Besides the planet was relatively quiet and Maisie could take her education while also working a full time job. Perfect. However one night a raid was launched but an insurgency force. Maisie sounded the alarm and managed to shot only two short bursts from the tower mounted M3 heavy machine Gun before the attack was abandoned and the raiders withdrew closely followed by the base infantry who hunted them deep into the icy landscape. So Maisie’s only combat experience was rather short and she never knew if she actually hit anyone but she prefers not to know either.
Upon graduating from the civilian course of Information Science and Communication, Maisie received an offer to join the Drop Corps because of her high grades in communications. She would be reassigned to the Dauntless Fury as a Radio Operator. This meant a possibility of getting into real combat again which certainly was something to think about and it meant that Maisie would have to leave her home planet again. Surely she spent a while fiddling with her braid that evening. But she accepted.
On an interesting note, because her home world is all mountains and snow and because she never felt the need to test out what might come natural to people born elsewhere, Maisie has never been in any form of liquid water that was more than what could be in a glass or a bottle of water. She is unable to swim and not even sure what will happen if she jumps into a real sea.
Sample Roleplay:
Two minutes. Only two lousy minutes had passed since she had last checked her watch. Maisie was sitting idly in the guard tower looking over the snow-covered plains surrounding the base. She had another four hours of watch duty ahead of her, well technically it was three hours and fifty eight minutes but it was all the same. This was time that she could have spent on her assignment for class. She had about six pages to write on antenna theory and that wouldn’t simply write itself while she gazed out into the darkness of night.
Her guard companion for the night had brought his assignment along and was eagerly writing stuff down in the sparse light of a little red torch. It wasn’t that Maisie hadn’t thought of doing the same but she knew that it was against regulations to neglect ones guard duty and she had seen student who were severely scolded by the base commander. It made sense of course because the planet was important to the production of the military ships and weapons.
Most nights however the only action one saw was a lone animal that crept through the snow and even that was a rarity. However as Maisie looked out over the plains she suddenly noticed five or six dark figures moved towards the base wall. She gave her fellow guard a nudge and told him to go in and alert the base silently. He immediately dropped his notes when he too saw the approaching figures and rushed down from the tower.
While it probably didn’t take long, Maisie felt like she was alone in that tower for ages and the figures kept coming closer. Finally she called out to them: ‘Stop!’ She shouted and cocked the machine gun to let the approaching group know that she meant business. Briefly they stopped walking and Maisie was moments from breathing out in relief. But then the band of figures opened fire. Not only at her tower but at the entire base. Maisie opened up as well and sent a burst of rounds down towards the group. One burst however and the gun was smoking from the meeting of the cool air around the hot barrel. But when she pressed the trigger again, nothing happened. The biggest problem about the cold weather on her home planet had to be that weapons jammed all the time and this was a bad time to do it on. However before the attackers could possibly know that Maisie’s gun was jammed, fire erupted all along the wall as the infantry soldiers had quickly gotten geared up and had taken firing positions.
The attackers were easily driven back and the infantry followed them to ensure that the threat was dealt with. Maisie had only managed to get off one more burst after having unjammed the weapon before the engagement was over. Not that she felt the need for more combat of course but she wondered if she had done enough. In the remainder of their watch though, Both Maisie and her student guard colleague were focused on the terrain in front of the base. The assignment could wait…
