January 6, 2759 1600 Hours Simulation Room, Dauntless Fury, Alpha Zero Zero One System
Hobbar had sent the word for the platoon to assemble here over an hour ago. He had uploaded the simulation inside of the computer. The simulation was ready to be used. Since they would be landing on VL-624 on January ten give or take. He hadn’t figured that the entire company would be using the simulation as the Captain hadn’t called up for one. But Hobbar wanted his platoon to be ready and have a better sense of their surroundings when they did land. Not knowing the terrain before hand made it more difficult in the heat of battle. He currently had on the simulation battle armor and did not have his helmet on as it was under his right arm. The lockers were to the left when one entered and were a dark grey. The armor looked similar to SDC armor except there was a large green light in the center. If a person got shot within the simulation then that person was a causality and either had to be treated or they were dead. Michael looked at his grandfather watch as he waited….

Silva walked down the hall, passing by the few people that were in this section of the starship. He knew he should be expecting this, after all Hobbar was a by the book kind of officer, and one who absolutely loved to train his people hard. He was probably the hardest lieutenant out of Kilo Company for that matter. The training simulation was not required by other members of the Platoon and Captain Jones had not given the Company any orders to do so. That just didn’t sit well with the lieutenant who saw a platoon on a starship that only headed off to exercise every few days as one that might forget how to function as a unit. The jump to Alpha-Zero- Zero one had only occurred a few hours ago and it was getting closer to the mission date. During that time, Silva had spent some of it going over the dossier which had been given to him.
It had all the names of the important scientists inside the colony as well as background information. He couldn’t really understand as to why there were only scientists here. He did understand the need for a initial survey……unless this colony meant to be the survey team. Then again, mankind hadn’t been colonizing new systems ever since the end of the Republican Civil War. He was hoping that the mission would be a quick check up on the colony. As for everyone who asked the question about why it took so damned long. It seemed to him that this colony reported directly to the Office of Colonization on Earth. And the Office of Colonization was probably getting an earful from the Council…..with proposed budget cuts. That was what he was currently thinking…well whatever was going on with it was not really his concern. What did have him worried about this mission though was the Special Security force that would accompany them down to the surface.
Anytime the S.S. was called in it was a sign of three things. One, the company was trying to keep something a secret from either the military or the government. Two, The company was being attacked by someone and did not trust the military to handle the situation. Or three his personal favorite theory was that the Weapons Department had committed some illegal experiment. That third theory was his favorite because of how stupid it sounded. The other two were usually true to a degree. He knew that there would always be secrets that were meant to be hushed up forever and the preservation of it. Entering the room he saw Hobbar with an old antique. “I thought you would of thrown that old piece of junk away by now Lieutenant.” Silva said as he walked inside.
Hobbar then smiled and said “Yes well there are some of who are still civilized in this god forsaken era.” He then said to Silva. “So before anyone else get’s here…..Staff Sergeant can I ask you a question off the record?” Silva was beginning to put on the specialized gear. He had only gotten on the guards for his shins when the question was asked. ‘What in the lord’s name is he talking about? Unofficial?’. He could not remember a time when the lieutenant asked him anything such as this. But then again he had only known Michael for a few months. “Yes Lieutenant.” He said. Hobbar then walked over to him. “Why do you think we’ve been sent to investigate New Saigon? I was asked that same question by the Captain. Now don’t tell anyone about this but he suspects that Human Corporation is hiding something. Anyone can make a colony on a moon it’s cheaper to process ore locally why then make the colony on VL-Six- Two-Four?”
Silva did not know at that moment what to say. What was he going to say…that Human Corporation had decided its new colony was part of some larger experiment and the inhabitants did not know of it? He then told Michael “I don’t know to be honest here lieutenant. I don’t know what to make of this…….mission. If Captain Jones truly had given us all the information that he had gotten then something is missing here and I’m not talking about a detail or two. I hope that’s an answer.” He told the lieutenant.
Hobbar nodded and then inhaled loudly. “I’ve got a really bad feeling about this mission Staff Sergeant. A really dark feeling.” Hobbar had the look of a man who had just seen the devil, even if that said person was not religious. “Why do you have a bad feeling about this mission lieutenant?” he said. Hobbar replied “Something does not add up on this mission. Something is missing sure the information is there but it is leaving something out. Yes it does take a colony this far out about nine months to get a communication back to Sol. But why did the S.S. request only one SDC Company be sent along? No Jorge, Human Corporation is hiding something…….I can’t put my finger on it. But they are hiding something.” Jorge grunted at him Michael and only slowly nodded. "Human Corporation definlty has some skeletons in its closet that's for sure." Jorge said. Silva was one of the growing people who believed that the Jankul Virus was bioengineered and set loose for some experiment by the Corporation. "Let's just hope to some high power I'm wrong."

Reed was looking forward to this. Unlike many of his fellow troopers he actually liked to train in the simulator. While it would be smaller then live fire excercises or field training on a actual field he felt like he was able to get out in the open air and relax. Even if that air had to be recycled it was good for people to get off their asses and do something. And as everyone knew having a field exercise with the platoon would find out problems that they might encounter on the ground . They could be fixed right then and there without actually being in the combat zone. Christopher wondered why the Captain hadn’t called for a Company wide exercise.
Then again Captain Jones was God when it came to the unit. He opened the door and saw Hobbar talking to the Staff Sergeant. Ignoring what they were saying he then began to put on the required combat gear for the exercise. The body armor was a very light grey with a large yellow light in the middle. The weapon looked like a standard rifle except it was colored yellow and did not fire any live rounds. Instead it fired a invisable laser and when it hit a person wearing the special armor it would blink. One very fast blink meant the person was dead. A slow blink meant the person was wounded. As he finished putting on the special armor he said to Hobbar “Hey Lieutenant, what's the simulation?"

OOC: My browser constantly froze so that is why this post is so dang short. Sorry Zhour came into the simulation room where it already looked like the Lieutenant and Staff Sergeant were busy talking to one another about whatever it was officers talked about. He was sure that he would never become a non- commissioned officer. Not that he did not mind the pay at all. While extra credits sure did sound nice he was not sure he would be able to lead people into combat. Having to make split second decisions on the battlefield where men or women might die under his own orders was something he would not want to do. He chuckled at Reed’s question. “Oh Reed haven’t you learned yet from the Lieutenant?” he said as he began to put on the specialized armor. “He’ll create a mission so out there that it will never happen. We’ll have impossible odds thrown against us and then he will send us to hell itself just you watch.” Zhour said nothing more and left it at that. He didn’t need to say anymore to get his point across. How could Reed now read what the lieutenant was thinking already? The man if he was able to would place the platoon in the training simulator all day every day time permitting! If there was one thing everyone knew about Hobbar it was that he wanted his platoon to be the best it could possibly be. Staff Sergeant Silva was the exact opposite of Hobbar. He was not the one to train constantly he just wanted to get the job done whether it was the right way to do it or not.

Hobbar had planned to do this anyways since the platoon would not be back at camp. While it was not an ideal training assignment, he wanted to make sure his people were over tip top shape. After all they had been on board a starship for a better part of a week. Not holding training sessions every now and then was not good for both morale or performance. As he found out the hard way back when he was a private. When enough people had gathered into the room he said “I know some of you would rather be somewhere else right now.” He knew that everyone hated simulations. “But trust me it will come in handy. I’ve created a simulation of the building we’re supposed to enter and search. The building houses over four hundred people and has five stories. Some of the apartments.” He used quotation marks with his fingers. “Are shared between families. Those colonists who have greater importance have a separate unit. The mission in this simulation has you rescuing two colonists with six hostiles throughout the building. Unlike the real building that we will be searching, this building only has a total of ten apartments with two floors. Five apartments per floor. Also unlike the actual mission I have not included the rest of the lay out in the simulation although you will be able to see where you are on your map. The rest of the area around the building is plain dirt.”
“The Colony itself has no trees or grass inside. This is also a timed mission. You have little over half an hour to search and secure the hostages and neutralize the terrorists.” He then walked over to the far side of the room and turned on the map for them to see. “You’ll be starting out on the outside of the building. Again you have thirty minutes to complete the mission. The rest of the Company will not be joining us for the exercise. The terrorists have no armor or helmets. Their weapons are the ones we have encountered before, although none of them have a sniper rifle. The hostages themselves are not rigged to explode, they are only tied up and in a chair. My Call sign is Red One with the Staff Sergeant being Red Two.”
He then explained the rest of the call signs to them. After telling them the mission he said “Questions.”

Well it was about time. He'd been waiting to see why the platoon was called for in the first place. And it wasn't like he was shocked or surprised. Everyone in the entire Company knew that Hobbar's Platoon trained the most out of the rest. It was a fact of life much like one had to eat food to live. He realized that the Lieutenant hadn't given call signs to the squads. Quickly he asked "Lieutenant what are the call signs for the squads and the sniper?" He had hoped that Hobbar would be prepared to answer the question about the sniper. The universe shook whenever Amberson was upset. Amberson is always right.
The training exercise in all other aspects was quite simple. He thought it was good in the aspect that they barely had any information about the mission. It was probably going to be a worse mission then the Captain was telling everyone. There was something odd about it. But he would not let that slip his mind or let the platoon know his thoughts, it was……devastating for morale if a unit did not know what was going to happen in the mission. He waited for the others to answer.

Zhour was just pleased to finally hear why they had been called here in the first place. He always knew the lieutenant would do some sort of training with the platoon. It was finally happening. Zhour had not expected to have this sort of training scenario though. A hostage situation was always one second away from being total FUBAR moment and everyone had to do what they were told at the exact moment. Otherwise the rescue operation would and in some cases did turn out awful. He remembered a few years before the rise of ARM how the SDC had attempted to secure a building over taken by pirates on HOD. He didn’t remember specifics but when the team breached the door it exploded on the team trying to enter the next room. That was one of the things that always worried him if the enemy would booby trap a door to explode.
Whoever had decided to switch the term “Booby trap” for “Improvised Explosive Device” was politically correct. As to why the lieutenant had decided to only have the one building instead of the entire colony well that was his call. Perhaps the lieutenant didn’t want the platoon to be distracted by the other surroundings. Or more likely was that the readouts on the colony was too vague for the computer to simulate. Whatever the reason he would be told what to do within the next few minutes. He shot a look at Heart. Hopefully the hostages wouldn’t be bleeding otherwise she’d have to treat them while the rest of the platoon cleared the building.

“I’m so sorry Staff Sergeant Silva yes. Our Sniper’s call sign is Arc Angel and Squad One’s Call Sign is Baron One. Squad Two’s Call Sign is Baron Two. I haven’t forgotten our Sniper, she will be on a hill one hundred yards south west of the building and will be on overwatch for the platoon while it secures the prisoners. Now when we first enter the simulation we’ll be passing by the hill immediately to our east. We will then advance to our target and attempt to secure the hostages. Again this building is very scaled down but it’s lay out is similar to what we will be coming across in the operation. Now….” He then gestured to the mock rifles laying out on the table in the corner of the room just before the entrance to the simulator room.
“These weapons do not fire actual rounds but rather they fire lasers that we will be able to see. The color for our side is blue while the terrorists will fire a yellow laser. When your hit the vest you have on will shock you and you will be unable to move what part of the vest was hit. Your helmet will also blink red that signals if you are dead.” He then went over to the table and grabbed himself a M68C9 Assault Rifle and grabbed the dummy clip. “Arc Angel head to the hill and provide over watch. Bravo One will be in front of Brave Two, both squads assume a column formation.” He then opened the door to the simulation room. What one saw in front of them was pure grass land although not that high, they could see the sun high in the sky shining on the land. There was no breeze and it was sunny. To their east just like Hobbar had said a small hill was in the vicinity. Far away to the North West was the actual target building, no one was able to tell if there was a look out……

Post by Christopher Reed on Jan 13, 2015 23:28:34 GMT -5
He felt the light breeze hit his face. Christopher didn’t know how anyone would ever get used to a simulation environment. He knew he was still here on the Dauntless Fury and not ground side. The wind though felt so realistic that his senses would of never known the difference. The mission simulated here to him smelled of a fuck up somewhere along the lines. Something would not go right, hostage rescues never went well. He’d only been in the Corps for a year and had never been part of a hostage situation. In films most of the time it went well and everyone was saved. But in the news it was always messy. Reed didn’t know as to why but he had a strange feeling about this entire mission.
Something rotten was going on in New Saigon and either no one knew what was going on or Special Security most likely was hiding behind clauses and regulations. But it was just a feeling. It was probably nothing important. Nine times out of ten a person’s gut feeling never amounted to anything and was a waste of time for the person. As he continued to slowly walk towards the target he quickly glanced with his eyes to his left and right watching the platoon in wedge formation approach the target building. He looked towards the roof and was not able to see any silhouette. Looking at the windows at the moment he was only able to tell that there was no one there either. So either the bad guys were waiting for them to get closer and open fire……or wait for them to breach down the door and have a close quarters fight.
But who was to say that the field didn’t have an enemy terrorist in it? They could be very well hiding in the field with some camouflage that was similar to the surroundings. It was very probable. He began to focus on the field in front of him and looked for any signs of any movement in the tall grass. The enemy could be anywhere. The armor was at least a little lighter then the actual armor that they wore in combat. The material might of looked the same, but it was a lighter material. He didn’t know this material perhaps Lieutenant Hobbar or Staff Sergeant Silva knew. Christopher wanted to find out and purchase his own set for private use…….if the Corps sold it. Then again everything in the Corps was made by Human Corporation.

January 6, 2759 1634 Hours Simulation Room, Dauntless Fury, Alpha Zero Zero One System
The platoon slowly made their way to the building. They were watching for any signs of movement within the field of grass that they were walking through. Any time something moved one or more of the troopers would be alerted and quickly scan for an enemy. The sun beating down on them did not make it any easier, it was a sweltering 92 degrees Fahrenheit. At least the humidity was low. The simulation room required its users to wear special vests to be able to interact with the world that was created inside. Body armor that was given to participants was not the same kind worn in the field. The body armor when hit with a laser would freeze a portion of the body.
It simulated a person being hit. A corpsman would have to hit a certain number of buttons within a certain amount of time or the person would no longer be able to continue on with the simulation. But that was only if the person was hit a non critical part of the body. If the person was hit in a more vital position that resulted in immediate death then the person would be immobilized and unable to talk. Of course at all times outside the simulator a commander would be watching for any signs of real malfunctions. Captain Jones was inside the next room and monitoring the progress of the platoon. It was safe. Sometimes complications did occur, people would have trouble breathing when the armor was immobilized if they were hit in a vital area or a simulation would break down and then end. Other then this the simulation room was perfect.
On the roof of the building a sniper and spotter were watching the platoon move forward. They had set up themselves in one of the corners of the roof and were well camouflaged. The scope then moved slowly over the platoon approaching the building. The sniper was trying to find a perfect target that would allow him to be able to hit another within a short amount of time. It was not easy as they continued to move forward slowly. It was easy to track their movements, as the grass also moved with them. Settling over a trooper in the first line the sniper fired.
A shot rang out and Staff Sergeant Silva fell down before he had a chance to shout anything. He crashed to the ground and lay motionless. His suit had been hit in what had been the heart and was now immobile. Before the platoon could take any kind of action a second shot rang out and this time it was Hobbar who was killed. He fell backwards and fell hard on the ground as well. His suit indicated that it was his head that had been shot, and now he too was immobilized…………Both the Lieutenant and Staff Sergeant were simulated as dead.

His rifle slowly moved back and forth. There was movement in the grass ahead and he pointed his rifle at it, waiting to see more movement or perhaps the figure within the grass. He then waited for a few more moments before looking around with his rifle. The grass was up to his waist and it would be very easy for the enemy to have one or two riflemen in the field, take a pot shot before running away to another position. Christopher would be feeling better once they reached the building at least they would be able to see the enemy. Even if the mission went south inside it would be more fair then getting killed here in the field. The enemy could be anywhere!
Suddenly a shot rang out and Reed went down not knowing whether someone was in the field ahead of him. He dropped into the grass and could not make out if the shot came out from someone in the field….or if there was someone on either flank of him. He grabbed his rifle tighter as he looked to the left and right very quickly. On his HUD he saw that Hobbar and Silva were both red dots….indicating that they were indeed killed from the shot. He tried to play it over in his mind as fast as he could. There was only one shot, meaning it had to be a sniper. Quickly he went onto the comm on all hands
“Baron One, Baron Two…I think we have a sniper. Dunno where the bastard is. Anyone got eyes on?”
That was all he said, after all he was only a Private First Class. Someone else would have to command the mission. He knew that if they stayed in the field then the platoon would eventually be picked off one by one. Wherever the sniper was he or she had a very good field of range.

Zhour couldn’t wait to finish with this simulation. He needed to get it over with and get back to what really mattered to him: Finishing the Chess match between him and Huxley. At the moment Huxley was winning and had taken his rook and knight as well as four pawns. But Zhour had been able to take two pawns and a knight. Not that he didn’t expect to loose…..but he would be surprised to win. He always was just awful at chess. He currently was knee high in grass. The grass was an easy area for a enemy rifleman to hide. Hobbar might of only placed six enemies but that didn’t mean that they wouldn’t be in the field.
He carefully watched any movement that he saw within the grass. Any sign of movement could be a potential enemy. Although his visor was able to spot weapons. He pressed a button on his helmet to listen for movement in the field. Your standard A21 Tactical "Marauder" Helmet was able to hear over 140 decibels that didn’t come from friendly personnel. There was talk of a new improvement coming where the helmets could also detect weapons with a new sensor by detecting metallic objects. As usual the military was slow at the moment due to the current recession. And it had no signs of slowing down. Hell by the time it got to Zhour it would probably already be out of date.
Looking on his map he was able to tell that Reed was ahead of him. Next to his right was Huxley and on his left was Silva. A shot whizzed by and suddenly Zhour went down prone face first onto the ground. His torso smashed into the ground and he lay there. On his HUD he was able to tell that both the Staff Sergeant and the Lieutenant were dead.
“Baron One, Baron Two…I think we have a sniper. Dunno where the bastard is. Anyone got eyes on?”
Stupid question. How could anyone be able to spot anything in the damned field with all the grass. But he guessed it was a question that had to be asked over the general com. “Hope Arc Angel has eyes on because I sure as hell don’t have any.” He said in a private line to Huxley. Then opening a line to Arc Angel “Arc Angel this is Baron Two you have any idea where the shot came from? Can’t see jack with this grass.”

The lone building in the simulator suddenly flickered. It occurred again and again before the platoon. The enemies disappeared. The field that the platoon were standing in flickered and the actual floor of the simulator could be seen. “Simulation Room Malfunction. Combat Scenerio Malfunction. Please exit the simulator. Simulation Room Malfunction. Combat Scenario Malfunction. Please exit the simulator.” An automated female voice said. Those who had been killed in the simulator were able to stand up. Hobbar then looked around him.
The Simulation Room continued to flicker with images of the building and the people in them. “First Platoon Exit the simulator.” He said on the comm link. Yes he knew that they didn’t need to be told but it wouldn’t hurt. He watched as the platoon filed out of the simulator room. After the platoon filed out he then stood in front of them all. “The simulator has malfunctioned. It’s a shame that we were not able to complete the exercise. I have a good feeling about what would of occurred. The platoon would of completed the objective and saved the hostages. On January tenth the Dauntless Fury will be in orbit of the planet VL-Six Two Four. We’ll be making planetary fall at 0600 local time. Until then the platoon will have ample time aboard the starship so make good use of it. Dismissed.”
