December 26th, 2758 Hades Demolition Range 49 degrees Fahrenheit
Alex had been out in the sun for five hours already. The demolition squad had wanted to get ready for the upcoming campaign by running bomb disposal and detonation drills which meant that Kilo Company needed to send out a medic with them in case anything happened. Alex being the newest edition to Kilo Company's medical platoon made him the obvious choice. He had been out on this kind of outing several times before but today was slightly different. A new soldier who had just arrived was out on the range today. Parker was her name, or at least Alex thought that's what he heard one of the sergeants called her. She was a beauty. Red hair, piercing eyes, and one helluva smile. She smiled at him when she was heading past his medical vehicle towards the range and he made a total ass of himself by dropping several gauze packs that he was transferring to his kit.
Even with the sun blazing down upon him he had his helmet off, taking in the cold breeze that swept down from the mountains in the distance. He enjoyed the cold weather and hated that he rarely got to experience it. What he hated even more was the crippling boredom that came with these types of daily assignments. Parker was his muse and distraction. His lovely distraction. Even her armor couldn't hide the curves of her body.
Shit...Alex thought to himself and shook the thoughts from his head. Gotta be professional and gotta keep my mind out of the gutter. He hadn't even been with this unit for more than a month and already he was walking the thin line between fraternization and friendship....if he could call a casual glance and smile friendship. Nevertheless his eyes continued to train on the new girl as she headed out to the line.

Lillian had quickly come to love her job. Explosives and fire - what's not to love? For someone who could have cared less, she had taken to it like a fish in water and after being out of training only a few months had found her niche within her new unit. It was calming in a way, to be around others like her doing something so specialized. Yet, as she nade way towards the others, she couldn't completely ignore the Medic who'd been assigned to their little exercise. He was handsome and she couldn't help but stiffle a laugh when she smiled and he suddenly got butter-fingers.
"Parker!" Her name being called brought her back to reality though and her attention shufted from the Medic to the task at hand. "Get us setup. FNGs get to screw up first."
Lilli tried not to get irritated. The Sergeant was a rough man who apparently had no interest in being a nice person. She'd quickly learned that most of the others hated him but haf heard that he was efficient when the shit hit the fan. She nodded, gathering up her supplies, taking the fuse he handed her - sans helmet and making her way to the large hole that had been dug into the cold earth specifically for this ordeal.
She worked deftly and soon had wired everything up properly. Happy with the setup, she began to hookup the timer. Lilli knew how to do this like she knew the back of her hand. She could do it in her sleep.
The wire had made connection for a split second. She didn't even have a chance to secure it before the explosion went off. Dirt rained down around her and the force of it knocked her to her back. Her ears were ringing and her chest hurt but she still made an attempt to roll to her hands and knes. When she finally did, she saw the others in an argument, a few just staring at her horrified. She couldn't hear anything over the ringing but one of the other Sergeant's was obviously having a few choice words with the jerk Sergeant.
Damn her head and chest hurt.

Alex took a deep drag of the native cigarette given to him by one of the local workers on the base and let the nicotine calm him. He blamed his friend for getting him into smoking but in the back of his brain he knew that was all bullshit. He held out the small stick and then shook his head in disgust. What better time to stop than now, he though to himself as he tossed the lit Alex took a deep drag of the native cigarette given to him by one of the local workers on the base and let the nicotine calm him. He blamed his friend for getting him into smoking but in the back of his brain he knew that was all bullshit. He held out the small stick and then shook his head in disgust. What better time to stop than now, he though to himself as he tossed the lit cigarette onto the ground and stomped it out. Alex looked back up to Parker and watched her as she stood back up from what she was doing. He smiled...but not for long.
BOOM!
The ground shook as shock pulled into disbelief across Alex's face. Rock, sand, grass, and fire shot into the sky. Parker disappeared into the smoke and then her body was thrown back out as if the black wispy beast didn't want her after all. He watched as her back slammed into the ground and rag dolled across the sand and onto the grass. His feet were instantly pounding towards her. He left his helmet on the hood of the medical vehicle but had his medical bag around his shoulder, prepared to take whatever action necessary. He just hoped she was still alive when he got there.
"Move!" he yelled as his shoulder slammed into the Sergeant who had been a prick all day. The others were not armored and were wearing basic uniform clothing, that's why when Alex connected with the Sergeant with his armored shoulder the NCO went flying. Alex didn't look back.
When he arrived at Parker's side she was attempting to get to her knees and hands. Alex stopped that immediately and got her onto her back. Slowly he removed her helmet. Her armor was dented and had scraped and rivets cut out of them but all in all the uniform was still intact. "You need to stay still while I check for any wounds, Parker" he commanded in a not so sweet voice. As a medic, regardless if it was a friend or not, you had to be very demanding and forceful when someone was wounded. By writhing or moving they could worsen there injuries and in extreme cases end up killing themselves.
His hands turned her onto her side and found no entrance or exit wounds in the armor. When that was complete he started to unhinge the armor that kept him from finding the real damage. By that time someone had made it to his side and all Alex did was tell them to get the fuck back. "Parker, what hurts right now? I understand that's a dumb question but in order for me to understand whats happening I need to know everything."

Lillian felt a wash of relief when the Medic came into her line of sight. She had intended to try to stand and his demand was met with an angry glare. Of course, she wasn't in the state to argue and could only faintly hear his voice over the excruciating ringing in her ears. She gave in and did as his hands and voice suggested, rolling to her back as she struggle to take a deep breath. The bright sky overhead had her squinting and for a moment all she did was stare up into the crisp, clear expanse of blue. She only saw the other person for a fraction of a second, and the word fuck caught most of her attention. Her lips tugged upwards as she muttered, "Fuck."
She felt the release of her armor and the pain in her chest on intensified. Lilli sucked in her breath, but that only made it even worse. Her bright green eyes looked up into his own green and the serious look of concern on his face was mesmerizing.
In the background, the Sergeant's were back at their arguing and Lillian faintly heard some nasty remark directed at the Medic and then, "You are a fucking prick. You knew that shit was malfunctioning, didn't you?" That sentence sent a shiver of fear down her spine. "No, no. I just... it wasn't supposed to do that!" Was the faint response.
Lilli's eyes widened as she stared up at the Medic, as if asking him some unspoken question. Yet, the question he'd asked for before any of that sudden came to the forefront of her mind. "My head, chest. Ugh, my ears." She shifted her head as if trying to get way from the annoying and painful ringing.

Well the head was absolutely understandable. At the very least Parker had a concussion, it didn't take a medic to understand that. She was lucky, though, if that's all she had. Alex quickly removed the scanner from his hip and began scanning her body for any breaks, tears, and internal bleeding. Alex sighed in relief as he quickly took in that no internal bleeding was fine. The most dangerous killer of soldiers was now out of the way. Next he noticed that she had slight swelling of the brain indicating she was, indeed, concussed. But no skull fractures or slipped disks could be found. Her chest and stomach was next and there is where Alex found the most damage done. Her organs were all intact thankfully even though her left lung was bruised; however, she had three cracked ribs.
"Parker, you're probably gonna be told this about a hundred times today and in the coming days but: You are one lucky sonofabitch." Alex smiled and holstered the scanner, "You have a concussion and some cracked ribs but no internal bleeding or organ damage. I'm gonna have to take you on over to the vehicle and bring you back to the actual medical center to be further evaluated and get your waist wrapped up." Alex stood and held out a hand for Parker, smiling once more.

Lucky. Rarely would she have found that word appropriate when speaking about herself, but he was right. Even Lillian understood the seriousness of what just happened and coming out with only a concussion and a few cracked ribs? It was almost unexplainable. She wasn't the sort of woman to over-analyze though and left it for what it was - luck.
At first, she only nodded to his statements. Her eyes were trained on him - his smile bringing out a hesitant one in her. Lilli took the offered hand, gaining her feet with a soft hiss as the pain on radiated. As soon as she was upright, everything began to spin. A small hand reached out, using the man for support until her balance and focus returned.
"Thanks." She murmured once they'd come up on the vehicle. Lillian was surprised at how okay she felt, but a concussion was nothing to mess around with and the raging headache was proof of that. She ignored the others who either merely stared or offered to help. She hoped the Sergeant got reamed for his little game and by the look on his ghost white face, he thought he'd killed her. "This isn't going to affect my accompanying the unit on that campaign, will it?" It was going to be her first mission and she'd be devastated if she'd have to be left behind.

Alex helped her into the passenger seat and even helped put her seat belt on. At that point he figured he was doing way too much and immediately calmed down. No need fer her to get the wrong idea and file a SHARP complaint. Closing the door he crossed the vehicle and opened the driver side. He pushed the ignition switch and turned the lever to start the engine. The vehicle hummed to life and the heat kicked on.
"Hey, where are you taking her?" a voice yelled from behind the medic. He turned to meet the individual and noticed the NCO who was obviously at fault for a joke gone wrong.
"I'm taking your soldier to the medical bay back on main post. Because you decided a hazing was in order she now has a concussion and three broken ribs!" Alex didn't mean to yell at the NonCom and almost immediately regretted it....almost. "You're a fucking non commissioned officer in the Drop Corps. You should be stopping stupidity not spreading it." Alex turned quickly and got behind the wheel, slamming the door as he began to pull away. He knew he should not have snapped at the sergeant and knew he would probably be standing in front of his platoon leader by the end of the day but he no longer cared. It had to be said, he almost got her killed for christ sakes.
Alex turned onto the main road heading back to post, "I'm sorry about that and about what happened. How's your pain?" he than added before she answered, "and no, your injuries are not severe enough to keep you from battle. With the technology the military has in medical science someone who has been shot can return to duty within a week. Your ribs will be mended within a few days and you'll be back to normal." Alex added the last part with a smile to make her feel better.

She was thankful for the help - regardless of how awkward it was. Lillian was far too concerned with only moving as much as she absolutely had to and so said nothing when he even buckled her seatbelt. She watched him, curiously, as he made his to the drivers side and brought the vehicle to life. She'd never been a fan of any sort of transportation besides walking. Her parents death was the last thing she needed to be thinking about at this moment, and yet, like so often, it crept into her conscious and caused a distant expression to spread across her face.
Yelling caught her attention and she mentally cringed. Lillian was fully capable of standing up for herself, but that fact of the matter was that she simply didn't want to deal with it right now. She knew, as did everyone else present, what he'd done and how lucky he wasn't going to be explaining a death on his watch. The medic's fiery retort caught her off guard and she sighed in relief when he said exactly what she'd been thinking. The slamming of the door shook the vehicle and she hissed in a breath at the pain it illicited from her head and chest.
She nodded when he explained away her concerns. "Thank you." Lilli said after another moment of silence. "I don't want you to get into trouble for saying what you did to the Sergeant, but... I appreciate it. More than you know."

Alex sighed and didn't look so sure, "I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have to make a visit to someone after this to explain why I talked back to a non commissioned officer. I don't really give a shit to be honest. Once I explain what happened and what he said and what I heard I'm pretty sure I'll be just fine." Alex did smile at that and turned into the main gate. He showed his ID to the guard and drove towards the medical bays.
"So what are you all about? I saw you just got here." He asked conversationally.

Lillian was fairly certain her Sergeant was going to have a rough few months head of him once the news got around about what he'd done. He was an ass though and obviously karma was biting him now. She remained silent when they went through the gate, but when he asked what she was about, Lilli wasn't quite sure how to respond.
"Well, I... uh..." She paused. No one had really been interested in her before and finding the words to describe what she considered mundane was proving difficult. "I just finished my training a few months ago. If that. So, yeah, very new. Which is the reason for the hazing, I'm sure." Lillian looked out the window, finding it hard to ignore the pain as the vehicle moved on. "Enlisted to get away. Start over. Find adventure. Pick one." She shrugged, and then grimaced when the movement sent a searing pain across her chest.
