This is a place to put your own artwork, stories, whatever you do for fun.
I had to rewrite a fairytale for a college course. It took a little work but you all know me, I did it. It was only supposed to be four pages and I used every part. Here is a modern day version of Hansel and Gretel.
A Twist of Fate
It was still raining and almost dark. “I don’t think we’re on the right street.” Hansel told Gretel. The duo was downtown and was trying to find a friend’s home. But the directions that they had received were not that clear. Trying to find a home in this part of downtown was quit the challenge and it did not help that neither of them knew the street. “Frank told us that he lived on the intersection of Fourth and Pine. He told us that his house was on the left hand side, and the number is 18171. We’ve been through this before Hansel, we’ve been down Fourth and Pine and didn’t see a house with that address, heck they never even reached 18.” Gretel told her brother.
The two teens had been trying to find the address now for at least an hour and a half. “You know it would have been easier if we didn’t go along with your plan. I mean come on Gretel….running away. Oh sure let’s just pack up ourselves. And how do you even know that mom is going to divorce dad? All you heard was something through the walls.” He said and looked in her direction. “Hey Hansel I know what I heard. I know that Dad is going to divorce mom, why else would he call a lawyer huh? Think about it just for a second would you. Unless Dad is a criminal of some sort or is in the business world then you can bet its divorce. They practically can’t stand each other in the same room. I’ve seen the looks mom gives him.”
“Look, Gretel it wasn’t that good of an idea to just run around tonight and go to some friend you found in an online chat room.” Gretel did not reply Hansel said. Hansel had on a dark red hoodie with jeans. His hoodie was soaked now. Gretel had on a black hoodie and jeans. It wasn’t that they wanted to be soaked but before running off, Gretel forgot to bring the umbrella. This is why they were both shivering in the rain. The street they were on was a side street with a few houses here and there. They were on a side walk and saw that all the homes had their lights out. “Hey look Gretel. That house over there has its lights on. Can we at least over there and ask whoever is home for directions for the address?” He asked his sister. “Ok, hey if it gets us out of the rain for a few seconds I’m up for it.”
Lisa Turner sighed again, and ran her fingers through her blonde hair. How was she supposed to come up with forty thousand dollars by next week? Lisa Barker had once been employed with the company ‘Volux’ a company that had placed people’s money into the stock market. It was supposed to be a good investment. She was one of the accountants at the company but after four years of being employed there, the Security’s Exchange Commission and Federal Bureau of Investigation shut the company down over a Ponzi scheme. The company ‘Volux’ was a fraud from the start. The entire company folded and Lisa was out of money. She owed forty thousand to the Russian Mafia in town. She had talked to them last month when she needed to pay her mortgage on the home and other expenses. Currently she was working at the local bank as an accountant but it wasn’t making enough. And the money that she owed the Russians had to be paid next week. The kitchen was across from her, she was sitting down at the living room coffee table, which was a rich dark oak. She pondered what she could do. If only something would happen, and she needed money now.
A knock came from the front door. Turning her head she got up from the table and walked over to the front door. The living room had two recliners, a television and the kitchen was across from it. A hallway came on the side and led to three bedrooms and two bathrooms. In front of the door on the left was a place for umbrellas, and a golf bag that had yet to be put away. Opening the door she saw that there were two teens.
They were both soaked and looked like they could collapse any second. The boy had dark brown hair, green eyes, and puffy cheeks. The girl had jet black hair with green tipped highlights; she had black glasses on and had green eyes as well. “Excuse me. Do you know how to find the address 18171?” the boy asked. Then Lisa suddenly had a very clever idea about how she could make all her troubles go away. She smiled and then said “Yes, why don’t you two come inside and get out of the rain?” she said. “Thanks.” the girl said and walked in. As they walked in, Lisa then stepped to the side and grabbed one of the golf clubs. Once they were inside, Lisa closed the door and locked it. The two were still looking around at her place when she hit Gretel in the back of the head with the golf club. As Hansel turned around, he too was hit in the head. On the floor, Gretel looked at the woman who was smiling before she blacked out.
Gretel slowly opened her eyes and looked around. The room was spinning and she then closed her eyes again. What had happened? Slowly she opened her eyes again and this time things came into focus. She was in what looked like a bedroom, with one bed and she was facing a dresser that had a mirror on it. She then realized she was tied up in a chair. “Oh so your finally awake.” Hansel said. He too was tied to a chair; both of them were back to back. “What happened Hansel?” she asked him. “Well let’s think about that for a second, we come here, some crazy person clubs us and oh yeah. We’re tied up!” he said and grinned. “You think I know what’s going on? I’ve only been up for the last ten minutes.” He said. “Sorry. Look have you heard or seen anything strange with her?” she said. “Yeah, I heard the name Varlaam a lot. She’s been talking about this guy since I’ve been up. I think she wants to ransom us or something.”
“Look you tell Varlaam this is what’s going to happen. I’ll hold them for ransom and get money. When I do I’ll wire it over to you. I’m sick and tired of you people. Expect it sometime tonight. Tonight you’ll get your money.” Lisa said on the cell phone. “Yeah, we will be waiting Ms. Turner. And if this goes bad, well let’s just say my associates won’t like it.” The line then went dead. Lisa decided what she could do was hold these kids for a ransom. She’d get the money one way or another. Unluckily for her she didn’t know that one of them still had their cellphones.
“Gretel, I still have my cellphone. I’m going to text dad and tell him to call the cops.” He told her.
“You still have that GPS app with your phone don’t you? Use that to send him the location of us and then have him tell the police where we are. I do not want to be kidnapped.” Hansel smiled and reached with his hands into the back of his jeans. He felt his cellphone sticking out one of the pockets. Pulling it out he then turned it on. He knew his phone but decided it’d be better to use the speak mode instead of texting. Saying in a low voice “Dad, Gretel and I are being held captive by someone. I think she wants to kidnap us. Please, call the police. I’m sending you the gps location.” The text then was ready to go. After he saved the message he went to the gps app. The gps app then found the location of them said. “Copy onto message.” The phone then copied the coordinates onto the text. “Send.” He said. The text was then sent. “Well that’s that. You think dad will send the police?” he said. “Yeah of course. Listen, Hansel. Sorry about bringing you into this stupid adventure of mine. I never thought that we’d get captured. I’m just….tired of them always fighting. I do think that they’ll get a divorce.” She said. “I don’t want it to happen Hansel, really I don’t. If I turn out to be wrong then I’m really sorry about it.” Gretel then looked at herself in the mirror. “What I really wanted was for them to realize that we were gone and coming to look for us. But I guess neither of them really care.” She said. Hansel then let out a large sigh. “Do you want to know what I really think?” he asked her. “Sure.”
She said and looked at the back of his head. Even though they were both tied together, she felt like they had never been so far apart as they were right now. “I do think mom and dad care about us. I mean they’ve stayed together for a long time. Sure they may not like each other as they did when they first met. But I think that the both of them are going to stick it out. Gretel you’ve really overreacted…like that time when my iguana ate that potted plant in your room.” He said and laughed. “You really should of seen the look on your face you know, god I remember like it was yesterday.” She sighed. “It was three years ago and no I didn’t over react. All I wanted was Henry to be gone. If you hadn’t locked him your room that day he probably would have been gone.” She said and smiled. “Look, Hansel. I’ve screwed up in the past and I’m really sorry about it right now. Let’s just get our hands on straight and-“She then saw something sticking out of Hansel’s jeans, it was his knife. “Hansel how long have you had your pocket knife with you?” Hansel then remembered he had it all along. “Oh …..um since we left the house?” he said. Gretel then closed her eyes and sighed. “My lord you really are awful. But your still my brother. Cut me loose.”
Lisa was pacing around in the kitchen. When the mob showed up at the house they’d handle the ransom part of it. She was just going to give the kids to them. But what if something went wrong, what if the Russians decided that they didn’t want any witnesses? What if they backstabbed her somehow and kept the money for themselves? What if… She was thinking this far too much. Grabbing soda from the fridge she walked around the kitchen and constantly went over her head about what might happen. Placing her hands on the counter she then sighed and that was when she heard the scream. Turning around the boy who she had tied up earlier was coming at her with a knife. Hansel stabbed Lisa in the right shoulder. The glass fell and the girl also came at her. The girl got behind her back and held her arms in place while Hansel got some of the rope they had cut and tied them. Lisa was kicking and screaming from pain and running backwards if she could. Gretel was pushed hard against the kitchen counter. “Hold her still!” Hansel shouted as he was finishing the knot. “I am you idiot!” Gretel replied back “‘Oh yeah I’ll hold her still, I got this’ great job!” Finally the knot was finished and Lisa fell face first onto the floor. Lisa was wiggling and trying to roll over but with the combined weight of them she couldn’t. “Help me hold her legs.” Hansel yelled. Hansel finished tying the knot. Lisa now couldn’t move. Hansel and Gretel both got up and looked at Lisa. Neither of them said a word to one another. The nightmare was over.
But another knock came at the door and Gretel went over to see who it was. She saw a man in a black leather jacket.
He had brown hair with blue eyes and had a little bit of a tan. She also saw uniformed police officers coming behind him. “Police, we got a search warrant for Lisa Turner.” Gretel opened the door and the man looked a little shocked at the two of them. Lisa was still moving around on the floor, and her shoulder was bleeding a little. “I’m detective Michael Hobbar. I’m with the police. I’m guessing you two are Hansel and Gretel?” he asked. “Yes, I’m Gretel and that over there is my brother Hansel.” She said and looked at Hansel who just pulled the pocket knife from Lisa’s shoulder. “Your safe now. Follow me please.” Hansel then walked with Gretel as the police officers entered the home. They were taken to a police car. “I believe there’s some people who want to see you.” He said as they went towards the police car. The car door opened and the teens saw it was their parents. Their parents came out and hugged them hard. Gretel was crying as was Hansel. “I’ll give you some time together.” As he walked away he yelled to one of the officers “Lieutenant Lamond! Get this woman out of my sight. I want this place secured; when CSU gets here I want to make sure we get everything. If this is the Lisa Turner we’ve been trying to find I want there to be no slip ups.”
After hugging Hansel again his mother looked at him and said “Why Hansel, why did you run away?” she asked him. “Gretel said you and dad were getting a divorce.” He said. The mother then turned to Gretel “What on earth made you think we were getting a divorce?” she asked. “What, they thought we were getting a divorce?” the father said. “Well I heard you on the phone with a lawyer and I assumed you two were going to separate.” She told them. “Honey, I was on the phone with your cousin Alfred. Him and his wife are getting a divorce, and wanted to ask me if I knew any lawyers in town. Your mom and I aren’t going to separate.” He told them. “So you’re not going to get a divorce…ever?” Gretel said a little shocked. “No. We’re a family. Now let’s get you two home.” The four of them then got into the police car and it drove off.
Lisa Turner was taken away in handcuffs and placed in the police car. As she did she looked one final time at the two children who had beaten her. How had they gotten that knife? Why did fate turn out this way?
