Speaker’s Residence, Faculta City, Titan, Sol
2130 Hours
Courtney Patel sighed as she looked outside the window of her bedroom. The driveway was full of cars, and she could see that both of the gates had been opened to help with the over. Her beautiful yellow gown couldn’t cheer her up, even if it was one of the most expensive gowns from Earth. She also had a pearl necklace. She had short brown hair , a small nose and brown eyes. She watched as people came into the mansion. She then looked up and saw the large reinforced glass dome, looking into the brown sky. Titan had been colonized since 2256. Multiple floating cities were across the surface. There were only a few cities on the artificial continents, but most of them were for farming. The liquid methane by the 2800’s had been taken from the moon and taken elsewhere. Water had been introduced to take the liquid methane’s place. The planet still had methane in it’d atmosphere however since the 3100’s Human Corporation had been terraforming the planet. Methane levels were lowered each year but it wouldn’t be until 3600’s when this would be complete. No shuttles at all were allowed on Titan due to the methane. Instead space elevators were the only way to and from the planet. There were 250 space elevators each city had one. Tonight was the yearly Speaker’s party. Each year the current Speaker invited everyone into her or his residence on Titan.
The reason for this residence on Titan was to make the legislative bodies feel more comfortable during the Corporate Wars. They had become suspicious of the current Speaker whom had many investments in the warring corporations. The residence had been a place of exile at first, but currently it was a badge of honor. The Speaker could invite anyone here for anything and not have to deal with all the political factions back on Earth bickering with one another. They could have private meetings with politicians…knowing that the residence was not bugged by Special Security. A knock on the door behind her, she turned around to see her husband. He had on a very flashy jacket and tie. He had his blonde curly hair gelled back, it looked quite stupid. But she told him that and he didn’t care.
“Courtney, it’s been half an hour since it’s gotten started. Don’t you think you should come down? Look I know this tax situation has you upset but you should at least come and see your guests.” He told her as he walked to her. She walked over towards him and held his hand. “It dosen’t matter what I do Henry. Is that bitch Yeun out there?” she asked. Pavel was referring to the leader of the Outer Colonial Party Ai Yeun. The OCP had the Senate and had support among the United Republicans who most of the time voted with the OCP. However the other parties of the Senate, the Democractic Liberals, Colonial Unionists and the Solarian Conservatives couldn’t do much. They didn’t have enough members to block legislation by Yeun. “Look, the Council will get us out of this mess. If your worried about that I wouldn’t be, she dosen’t control the financial sector. We’ll be fine.” He told her. Slowly Courtney nodded and walked with him out of the room.
Passing the multiple empty rooms on either side of the hallway with the deep red carpet they made their way towards the large staircase. It was a white marble staircase and was stunning. Below she could see the party. The front door was open with people coming inside, the main room in front of them had many people, all in extremely expensive clothing. People were talking to one another not paying attention at her. There were two large rooms on either side of the entrance, one was where guests could sit down and eat. Another was a place for music and dancing. “May I have your attention!” A person in a red dressed uniform announced above the talking. Everyone stopped and looked at him. “May I present to you, the Speaker of the United Colonial Republic!” Slowly Courtney and her husband walked down with the applause of the guests. It felt like the stairs would never end, she wanted this night to be over. Courtney they were only clapping because they had to not because they wanted to. Reaching the bottom of the stairs, she was approached by many people who mostly said thank you for inviting me. After that rubbish, Courtney saw Yeun who had stood behind her reporters. She was in a modest white dress, not that lavish. She had her jet black hair hair in a bun. Her nose was small and here eyes were black. “Ah Speaker Patel how nice of a party you’ve thrown.” She said and walked with them. “Well…thank you.” Pavel replied it was taking all her strength not to grab the woman by the throat and strangle her right now. “I’m sorry to hear about what has been happening within the Senate. How come Takeaka hasn’t voted for anything you’ve proposed within the last month? I thought he would help you.” She said smiling. Yeun knew that Patel was not doing well politically but she took any dig she could. “That would be lead Senator Ayumu Takeaka for the United Republicans. They are tired of what I’ve been trying to do. But have no fear Speaker, we’ll have this matter cleaned up by next month.” She said and smiled at Patel. Henry could see that Courtney wouldn’t be able to take this so he said. “Ah, local councilman Patrick how wonderful of you to come!” He saw a local councilmen from Titan’s local government not far from him and grabbed Courtney’s hand dragging her away from Yeun.
“Look at these idiots. Their all whining and dining while my people take pay cuts. I’d rather be back at the Triangle working on deployments. The whole thing makes me sick to my stomach.” General Richard Starlite said. He, his wife Victoria and Kathrine Almos, Secretary of the Navy were standing in the dining area where a large buffet was. Any kind of food was being served tonight. Richard Starlite was in charge of the entire Special Drop Corps and rather then dismantling two entire fleets as the navy did he took a paycut. “I’m not happy about the situation either. We couldn’t cut our member’s pay General. That’s……unacceatable. So, when do you expect your people to finish up on Sisyphus?” she asked him. “Oh I think they will finish by August or September, it won’t be till June when we hear what has happened. No the ARM when it’s fighting against a conventional force will loose. They do better attacking soft targets and guerilla style of warfare. And the Army and Special Security is also on the planet. There’s no where General Sneer can run this time.” He said in good confidence. “Darling you have to try these mushrooms.” A man said walking up to Almos. “I will in a second, Victoria, Richard let me introduce you to my husband. Jeffery.” The man quickly shook both of their hands. “I’d love to stay and chat but I see they just brought in some sort of chocolate dessert!” and left without saying good bye.
“I apologize, my husband likes buffets. You should of seen our wedding I had to force him to dance with me.” Victoria let out a cute but loud laugh. “I’m sorry for laughing..sorry.” she said. “No, it’s quite alright, I know it’s funny. General.” She said and General Starlite looked at her. “Yes?” he said to her. “I’ve been thinking about what you told me last month when you stated that the weapons department was currently testing powered armor for both the Army and the Corps. Is it possible for the navy to be involved as well?” she asked him. General Starlite smiled and said “I would be able to pull a few things in the Triangle. That and I personally know Victor Masson, so yes I do think the Navy can contribute to the project. Even if it’s our only project the Senate hasn’t pulled funding from. “ He told her.
Victoria suddenly spoke up. “Cathrine, can you tell me is the Navy doing well with these cuts at all? I personally think they should of cut Special Security’s budget…even if it is owned by Human Corporation.” Almos could only smile back at her. “We are going to weather the storm, the only bright spot is the inner colonies which are picking up a little. I don’t think this will last much longer, according to our own projections it’ll save the Navy from further cuts. We expect that by disbanding two of our fleets in the inner colonies, it’ll save 150 billion credits. Because you have to pay crews, supply starships with equipment, food and other essentials. That is not counting the maintenance of the starships. We mothballed one fleet in Alpha Centurai that was old and it now only currently has one fleet. Swaziland as well has been effected. Yes, these cuts while painful will long term help us with our budget.” She said in response. Victoria only nodded and said “Yes” and started to motion for them to get away from Starlite. The two women walked away from him and Starlite stood there and walked on over to the buffet to grab himself some food.
“Ah Victor, so glad of you to come!” Courtney when she saw Victor Masson. He was dressed in a very fancy suit with a black bow tie. His white hair was slicked back and his brown eyes were bright. His hawkish nose was large. He was 75 years old and almost always smoked when he was seen in public. Victor did not take any rejuvenation drugs what so ever, even without them he could live to be 110. It was rare for him to make public appearances. He went up to the Speaker and her husband smiling. “Why I wouldn’t miss this for the world madam Speaker. After all I’ve been coming to these for so long I didn’t want to break my record.” He told her. Courtney in reality detested everything he stood for. “How is Mars? I haven’t been there in years.” She told him. “Ah, Mars is doing well. The city of Wells has not had any trouble since our Special Security forces found a local ARM group. Since then we have had no terrorist incidents on Wells or anywhere on Mars for that matter. I wish we had met under better circumstances.” He told her. Everyone knew about the Speaker not paying taxes for two years in a row in her past. It had finally caught up to her. “Yes…yes I do wish that we met under better circumstances today. I heard from the financial minister that the weapons department has seen a seventy six percent increase in sales of hand guns.” Pavel said trying to change the topic. Masson smiled and started to walk with the Speaker following. “I don’t believe so. The latest from our own accounting stated that the true number in fact is eighty four percent in arms sales, mind you that is fourteen percent more than last year. I don’t think this will effect Human Corporation’s over all profit for this quarter though.” He said to her. A waiter holding a large tray full of bourbon glasses were presented to the trio.
They were large glasses more like mugs actually. Masson took one, as did the madam Speaker. Her husband though grew up as a extremely strict Protestant up bringing on his home planet of Thallus in the Justin star system. He never took a drink nor had he ever in his life. But that did not stop him from spending very lavishly on his own desires. There were reports that he had twenty personal water ships back at the Pavel’s home on the planet Trio in the Wolf 424 system. This was in addition to a private movie theater that he constructed during his wife’s first month being in office. The movie theater had been attached to their mansion and was only used with personal friends or family members. “I can’t get over the rumors about you madam Speaker. So tell me are those rumors about the twenty personal ships true?” he said and took a sip of his drink. Henry had a look on his face as if he’s seen a ghost. Courtney suddenly felt a surge of anger inside her and did everything she could to remain calm. Who’s business was it for him to sneak around? Besides half of what the press was telling people wasn’t true.
“Those are not true Victor. They were created by members of the Outer Colonial Party.” She shot back. Victor only smiled and said “Ah yes, the Outer Colonial Party. Tell me, the election for the Senate, Council and Speaker is next January am I correct?” they then walked to the buffet room where it was packed with people. The room was so full that it was hard to get through. Women wore the latest fashion outfits for this evening. Of course anyone who was anyone was wearing the large golden orb over their entire head. It covered the person’s eyes and allowed them to also broadcast to family or friends what they saw. It also allowed personal interactions that showed images or created images in the brain that would otherwise have to of taken place somewhere more…private. Only a few of the female politicians wore them, but many wives of the politicians wore them. It was a golden orb that went over a person’s head, extremely and covered the eyes but the real feature was the large red camera lens in the very center. This allowed a live steam feed of the entire party. “Ah, I still don’t believe you madam Speaker.” Masson said and smiled with his white teeth. “But I will stop pestering you with these questions. I’m afraid I have to leave your company, and see some more people. Again I wouldn’t of missed this party for all the credits on Mars.” Victor then slowly walked away as the Speaker and her husband found a table to sit at.
