The lieutenant was straight to the point and while it probably was just how the military worked, Maisie couldn’t help but feel that it was all a bit alienating. Of course it didn’t help that she was in a totally new place and that she was very unsure still if she had made the right decision. Especially after seeing the shared bunkroom she became a bit uncertain but she wasn’t going to write off the entire thing yet. It just felt a bit like an uphill battle to begin with.
The little introduction made by the Lieutenant was finished by the exact assignment to the squad and Maisie nodded. She was educated in communications and it would have been odd for her to do anything else. But when she was asked if she had any questions she only needed a brief moment to think before she moved the new assignment out of her head and replaced it with the former concern: ‘Um, yes sir…’ She said and temporarily let go of her braid to speak her mind. ‘I just walked passed my assigned quarters and it has both women and men there… Can that be right?’

Hobbar smiled when she asked if all the berths were for both sexes. “Yes, every single berth like that in the entire navy.” He then quickly summarized that this was most likely her first trip outside of boot camp. “I take It you’ve just come from Arcturus? If I remember correctly the barracks are separated and everyone has to live with at least twenty other people per room. Well here in real life we live together and sleep together. If your going to ask if they share the same bathrooms, nope those are still separate as are the showers. There’s something your going to want to know about the Staff Sergeant. In the field he’s the kind of type that is how can I put this……more” he tried to come up with the word that he was looking for but just could not find it. “ You’ll see for youself, just follow his orders and you won’t have any sort of problem.”
“Excuse me.” Cruickshank said as he walked out of the door. Hobbar moved to the side as he walked out into the hallway. “Geez Cruickshank where are you going at this hour, it’s only fifteen hundred.” He said as Cruickshank walked away. “Captain Jones ordered me to come to his office don’t know why.” He said and continued to walk. “Hmm.” Hobbar said to himself in a low voice. That was odd, of all people why did the Captain want to see Cruickshank in person? “Ok Forrester right? Go to the berth and get yourself comfortable, anyone gives you trouble come see me or the Staff Sergeant.”

It wasn’t exactly an encouraging answer that Maisie was given to her question. She wasn’t even sure why she had been the least optimistic in the first place. She had already seen that men and women seemed to share the place when she arrived and it would probably be a naïve thought to imagine that it was a one-time thing that the men were in the women’s room. ‘Yes sir… I am just very new to the thought of sharing quarters with men’ She answered and decided to keep her relatively short life story to herself. Surely the lieutenant didn’t care much and he probably found it silly to be worried about who to bunk with. It was a relief though that the showers and restrooms were not shared.
With a nod, Maisie indicated that she understood the brief but unfinished mention of the staff sergeant. Sure she wasn’t completely certain of what might be the issue with the staff sergeant but the advice to just do as she was told was sound. She stepped aside when the Lieutenant needed to speak to someone else and she waited patiently for him to finish. There wasn’t much to wait for though as she was then told to go to the berth and to come to him or the staff sergeant if there were any problems. ‘Yes sir!’ Maisie said and saluted the officer once more before heading off.
